What is the Pupil Premium?

The Pupil Premium provides additional funding on top of the main funding a school receives. It is targeted at students from disadvantaged backgrounds to ensure they benefit from the same opportunities as students from less deprived families. From September 2020, children who at any point in the past 6 years have been in receipt of Free School Meals (FSM) will receive £1345; £2345 goes to any child who has been continuously looked after for the past six months or who has been adopted from care under the Adoption and Children Act 2002 or who has left care under a Special Guardianship or Residence Order; finally £310 goes to pupils whose parent/parents are currently serving in the armed forces or are in receipt of a pension from the MoD.

How the Pupil Premium is spent is monitored closely with all schools accountable for the impact of the money spent.

Catch-up funding

In response to the Coronavirus pandemic and specifically the impact of lockdown, the government have introduced catch-up funding for the 2020-21 academic year. The Covid catch up premium is £80 per pupil for year groups Reception to Year 6. This will be received in 3 payments, the initial part payment in the Autumn term, will be calculated on the January 2020 census, the second one is due in the Spring term based on updated pupil numbers from the October 2020 census and the final payment is due in Summer 2021. We are anticipating a total payment of approximately £13,840.

Schools have been directed to use this funding for specific activities to support pupils to catch up for lost teaching over the previous months, in line with the DfE guidance on Curriculum expectations for the next academic year. Schools have the flexibility to spend their funding in the best way for their cohort and circumstances.

Our intent is to help children catch up. In terms of implementation, during the Autumn Term, we started running additional catch up sessions for the children utilising existing school staff rather than external agencies. We believe that school staff are best placed to support the children as they know their needs.

We have already purchased a number of resources and interventions including:

  • Shine Maths Intervention
  • Shine Reading Intervention
  • GL Assessment WellComm – Speech and language support for Early Years
  • SNAP Behaviour Intervention
  • SNAP SPLD (Specific Learning Difficulties) Intervention

In terms of impact, our usual assessment mechanisms will enable us to measure impact and progress. We completed a baseline assessment in September and end of term assessments in December.
